August is here! 🎒 As a former teacher, this month brings fond memories of school supply shopping, designing new bulletin boards, attending professional learning events, and building relationships with students and staff as a new academic year begins. In my current role, however, I often work with district leaders who are facing significant stress during this time. Unfilled positions, the need to plan and manage professional learning events, and other pressing challenges weigh heavily on them. After talking with my clients and observing how they navigate these issues, I felt compelled to share two strategies that have proven effective in addressing these challenges.Level Up Your Social Media Presence! Get creative with your job postings to capture attention. Consider having employees share videos about why they love their school and what makes their organization special. Posting photos from professional learning programs, such as new teacher inductions or mentoring events, can also highlight your commitment to employee growth and development. Make potential candidates stop scrolling and think, "I want to work there!"Offer Blended Professional Learning! Time is valuable at the start of the school year, so strategically balance in-person and online content. Consider what topics benefit most from face-to-face discussions and collaboration, and which can be effectively delivered in an online format. This approach not only saves on personnel and travel time but also enriches the employee experience by catering to different learning styles and personalized needs. Plus, as new employees join throughout the year, they'll have access to reproducible and easily accessible training from day one.Feel free to reach out if you'd like to discuss these strategies in more detail or share new ones. I’m always eager to hear what’s working in our K-12 community and to learn from your experiences! #alwayslearning #K12 #employeesfirstLooking for a great article about beginning of the year professional learning? One of the main points I make when providing #professionallearning opportunities is to ask participants:What is one strategy or take-away that you can apply to your current work, *tomorrow*? The most important part of #professionaldevelopment is USING WHAT YOU LEARN.👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

This caption is mainly for people who lead professional development for teachers…The biggest lie told to educators during professional learning sessions: “This won’t be any extra work, because it’s just like [something we’re already doing].”The truth is that trying something new or learning a new way of supporting students will always involve extra work, so why try to hide it? It’s not like the caring professionals in the room or on the Zoom can’t see/smell the extra work hiding in plain sight. When leading professional learning, I prefer to be honest about the size and shape of what I’m asking these caring educators to do. This means:-Taking as much work off teachers’ and principals’ plates ahead of time. That way, we’re focusing on helping students learn and grow, and not ‘hidden busywork.’-Being exceptionally aware of the “smallest effective dose” of something, and only training on that. (This is one of a thousand reasons I don’t recommend school stores be involved in your school’s #PBIS framework….they’re way too much work.)-Equipping teachers with everything they need to get started. Whatever supplies they need will be at the training or delivered to their classrooms. Right now, I’m wondering….What memory might you have of a time when PD truly made something more manageable for you? What did the facilitator do?#ProfessionalLearning#PLC

Learner engagement determines how effective any learning experience is. The best design means nothing without the learners’ attention and active participation. But how can learning businesses foster engagement?Join us and BenchPrep on May 16th at 1 pm Eastern where we’ll explore techniques to foster engagement before, during, and after learners interact with your continuing education and professional development programs. You’ll leave the sessions with ideas for activities and approaches to use to foster engagement as you promote your offerings; as you design, develop, and deliver them; and as you work to support ongoing learning and retain those individuals as customers.Reserve your complementary spot now >>https://lnkd.in/en_wxnN#learnerengagement #engagement #continuingeducation #professionaldevelopment #learningbusiness

Educators are eager to engage in professional learning as long as it is authentic, relevant, and tailored to their specific needs and the needs of their students. That's why we've spent over a decade reinventing professional development to go beyond one-size-fits-all workshops and make the content and structures more relevant to classroom practice. How does your PD stack up? What do you wish was better?

I’ve always said that the hands-down hardest thing about being a principal is this:You have to achieve results through other people. You can have the most inspiring vision in the world, the most detailed plan, and the clearest systems. But if you can’t get your teachers and staff to align their thinking and actions with what you’re trying to achieve …Well, you end up an unacceptable number of students who get left behind, a discouraging and even toxic culture, and nagging doubts about your abilities and effectiveness as a principal. That’s why my upcoming Staff Alignment Boot Camp is focused on simple, yet incredibly powerful, strategies you can put into place next week to: 👉🏻 Get your entire team on the same page from day 1👉🏻 Help everyone immediately committed to your school goals👉🏻 Help every teacher show tangible growth this school year.👉🏻 Create built-in accountability so your team takes ownership of their results👉🏻 Deliberately engineer a positive school culture👉🏻 Get more done this year with less effortBest of all, this Boot Camp will NOT give you a lot of “cool” ideas that you won’t have time to implement, a bunch of plans to complete on your own, or a long list of MORE things to do.We’ll do the work – together. In just 90 minutes a day, you’ll knock critical items off your to-do list. Each day, you’ll be better positioned to get your entire team aligned behind your vision before students even walk in the door.“The biggest overall victory is finally having everyone on the same page for the same purpose and with the same intentions. I don't have to spend time explaining why because everything is centered and anchored in the vision, mission and core values....The narrative has indeed shifted and learning is no longer about the teacher or the parent, but the focus is 100% on our learners. How are we transforming minds, growing learners and developing leaders each day? Personally seeing the sheer joy for teaching on my campus has been so exciting to see. I am deeply motivated to see things through, and having things in place, in writing and a team that I'm working with holding me accountable has been very refreshing…”~ Navone JohnsonThe Boot Camp is my “back to school” gift to you, and it’s open to any K-12 administrator who wants to go beyond the status quo and actually start the year with a completely aligned staff. I rarely take a break from work during holidays—not because I'm a workaholic, but because I love what I do and want to keep the learning process ongoing for my students. As I teach both online and in-person, I've been reflecting on the benefits and challenges of each learning format.Online learning makes it easier to balance education with work or other commitments since courses can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection. However, subjects that require hands-on practice, such as practical etiquette lessons, can be challenging to deliver effectively online. I strongly believe that face-to-face communication with instructors and peers can enhance understanding, engagement, and motivation. On the other hand, online programs can be more affordable and offer diverse resources, providing access to a global pool of educators and peers. The choice between online and in-person learning depends on individual preferences and specific circ*mstances. Some may benefit from the flexibility and accessibility of online learning, while others may thrive in the structured and interactive environment of in-person education. If possible, especially after our long period of isolation, I love to offer hybrid models that combine elements of both online and in-person learning. This approach allows me to travel and still be present for my students.Which type of learning do you prefer?#education #learning #flexibility #workingfromhome
