SNYDER How many times have you caught yourself knocking on wood while thinking, "I hope that doesn't happen to me, or I hope that would happen to me?" Have you ever wondered where this custom started? Knocking on wood is about as old as primitive man's efforts with the powerful force that ruled him, namely nature. The Druids of ancient England made a big thing of it knocking on wood (a tree) to summon spirits to ask for help, a favor, or to give thanks for these things. In time this had spread to latter-day Ireland.

The Irish, of course, knocked to call the leprechauns to thank them for good luck. As religions of many kinds spread over the world, touching a wooden cross in Christian hands became a substitute for prayer in some societies, and supplanted the Bible in oathtaking So, over the centuries, many customs came and went, but knocking on wood is still with us CHARLES F.
