What’s the secret ingredient in our Green Garden Bloody Marys? California Avocados! They add the perfect touch of creaminess, taming the subtle spiciness of this co*cktail.
Bloody Marys rose to fame in the early 20th century. A French bartender named Ferdinand Petiot is credited with inventing the drink – he simply spiced up the already popular tomato juice and vodka co*cktail. Ferdinand worked at a popular Parisian bar that was frequented by American servicemen and celebrities. When Ferdinand moved to New York in 1934, he found work as a bartender at the St. Regis hotel and introduced his the recipe for Bloody Marys to the American public.
Where did the name “Bloody Mary” come from?
While the origin of the drink is generally agreed upon, there are quite a few different stories of why the tomato and vodka co*cktail is called a Bloody Mary.
Some people believe that Ferdinand named the co*cktail after Mary I of England, who was known as “Bloody Mary”. Another story states that the co*cktail is named after a server at Chicago’s (unfortunately named) Bucket of Blood Saloon.
What ingredients are used to make Bloody Marys?
Traditional Bloody Marys are made with tomato juice, lemon juice, vodka and an assortment of seasonings and accoutrements.
Our Garden Green Bloody Mary recipe is a riff on the classic recipe – using fresh fruits and vegetables in lieu of the canned mix. Using tomatillos and yellow tomatoes instead of tomato juice gives the co*cktail its gorgeous green hue.

- 1 cup yellow cherry or grape tomatoes plus 6 for garnish
- 1-2 jalapeños stems and seeds removed
- 1/2 cup loosely packed cilantro leaves and stems
- 12 ounces vodka
- Juice of 2 limes
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon prepared horseradish
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- Optional: 2-3 dashes green hot sauce

In a blender, combine half of the avocado with celery, cucumber, tomatillos, tomatoes, jalapeño,and cilantro, and blend on high until smooth.
Add in the vodka, lime juice, water, Worcestershire sauce, horseradish, salt, pepper, and hot sauce (if using), and continue blending for 10-15 seconds, until mixed.
