Staying cool with extra pool hours at the Y (2)

The Stillwater YMCA has extended its open swim and lap lane hours at least 20 hours per week and has lessened the standard fee on certain days between certain hours.

With the muni pool closed, the local Y working towards building a future facility to include a robust aquatics program, and soaring, extended triple-digit temperatures, this is the area’s only pool for exercise and recreation right now.

While it is shared for swim lessons and swim meets, the additional hours are a welcome relief for City and County residents, said Executive Director Stillwater YMCA Shane Harland.

“We started out pretty slow at first, each week people taking advantage of the extra hours,” he said. “But with each week that (goes) by, we’re getting more and more traffic as the word gets out.”

The additional hours for the open swim and lap lanes are from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday, 8:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, with a cost of $5 per adult or child during those times. Outside of those hours, without a membership, fees are $10 for adults and still $5 for children.

With the pool so busy, Harland advises that people call in advance to find out what the best times and days are.

For example, there will be a swim meet all day on July 6, Harland said.

“We have practice and swim lessons in the mornings and evenings, but our 1 to 5 p.m. attendance is growing and we’re glad to be able to provide that service,” he said.

Lifeguards monitor how many children are in the pool and designate lap lanes according to traffic, so there should always be lap lanes available, Harland said.

To find out about the day’s pool attendance, call 405-372-5833.
